Opening Up Your Floor Plan: Load-Bearing Wall Removal

Open-concept living is one of the most requested renovations. But most interior walls are doing a structural job — you can’t just knock them down. Here’s what you need to know.

Load-Bearing vs Non-Load-Bearing Walls

Load-bearing walls support the structure above them (floor joists, roof trusses, upper storeys). Removing them requires replacement support.

Non-load-bearing walls are partition walls that only separate rooms. Much easier and cheaper to remove.

How to Tell Which Is Which

You can’t always tell without a structural engineer. General indicators:

  • Walls running perpendicular to floor joists are more likely load-bearing
  • Walls with beams or posts stacked above them are almost certainly load-bearing
  • Exterior walls are always load-bearing
  • Walls in the middle of the home are often load-bearing

Always hire a structural engineer to confirm.

Cost to Remove a Load-Bearing Wall in Calgary

Project Cost Range
Single-storey home, simple beam $5,000 – $10,000
Two-storey home, standard span $8,000 – $15,000
Long span or complex load $15,000 – $30,000
With steel beam + posts hidden in walls $12,000 – $25,000
