The Real Story Behind Calgary Kitchen Renovations

The best way to understand what a kitchen renovation can do is to see actual before-and-after results. Here are common Calgary kitchen transformation scenarios — what we see, what we change, and the difference it makes.

Scenario 1: The 1990s Oak Kitchen

Before

A 1995 Tuscany-style home with original honey oak cabinets, laminate countertops, ceramic tile backsplash, and a layout with a peninsula instead of an island. Everything was functional, nothing was beautiful. The homeowners loved the neighbourhood but dreaded their kitchen.

After

New two-tone shaker cabinets (white uppers, navy island), quartz countertops, subway backsplash, pendant lights, and a proper island with seating for four. The oak removed, layout mostly kept, plumbing and electrical updated.

  • Budget: $72,000
  • Timeline: 9 weeks
  • Biggest impact: New cabinetry + island. Completely transformed how the family uses the space.

Scenario 2: The Small Condo Kitchen

Before

A 700 sq ft Beltline condo with a galley kitchen, builder-grade everything, no storage, and a window blocked by upper cabinets.

After

Removed the upper cabinets on the window wall (open shelving instead), added deep base cabinets, new countertop, backsplash, and upgraded appliances. Suddenly bright, functional, and chic.

  • Budget: $28,000
  • Timeline: 5 weeks
  • Biggest impact: Light. Removing the blocking upper cabinets made it feel 3x larger.

Scenario 3: The Estate Home Gut

Before

A 2005 Aspen estate home with a closed-off kitchen, separate formal dining room nobody used, and dated dark cherry cabinets.

After

Load-bearing wall removed (new beam), kitchen and dining merged into open-concept with a 10′ island, custom white cabinetry, quartz, Wolf range, Sub-Zero fridge, whole-house lighting overhaul.

  • Budget: $145,000
  • Timeline: 14 weeks
  • Biggest impact: The open plan. Changed how the entire main floor functions.

What These Stories Have in Common

  • The layout change (or opening it up) had more impact than any finish upgrade
  • Lighting was underestimated before and celebrated after
  • Every homeowner said “I wish I’d done it sooner”
