Your Backsplash Is the Jewelry of Your Kitchen

The backsplash is one of the cheapest things you can change in a kitchen that makes the biggest visual impact. In Calgary, we’re seeing homeowners move away from safe white subway tile toward more statement-making options.

Backsplash Materials & Cost (Installed)

Material Cost / sq ft Notes
Ceramic subway $12 – $20 Safe, timeless, budget-friendly
Porcelain tile $18 – $30 Durable, huge variety
Natural stone (marble, travertine) $25 – $50 Stunning but needs sealing
Glass mosaic $25 – $45 Reflective, easy to clean
Zellige (handmade) $35 – $60 Moroccan, textured, high-end look
Slab (quartz/porcelain) $60 – $120 Seamless, matches counters

⚠ Estimate Disclaimer: These are only ROUGH estimates that can vary wildly. Do not take these numbers as gospel. Having a defined scope of work and exact selections will give you clarity.

2026 Trends We’re Installing

  • Full-height slab backsplash — quartz or porcelain that matches the countertop, running to the ceiling. Calgary’s hottest trend right now.
  • Zellige tile — handmade Moroccan tile with variation and texture
  • Vertical stack subway — same classic tile, installed vertically for a modern twist
  • Hex and scallop shapes — adds visual interest without being trendy
  • Warm earth tones — terracotta, sage, warm cream replacing cool greys
  • Natural stone slabs — book-matched marble or quartzite as art

Subway Tile: Still a Winner?

Yes. Classic 3×6 white subway is never going out of style, it’s budget-friendly, and it resells well. But if you want it to feel current, try: offset stack patterns, vertical install, coloured grout, or larger format subway (4×12).

How High Should It Go?

  • Standard: Countertop to underside of upper cabinets (18″)
  • Behind range: Extend to hood or ceiling for drama
  • Full height: Floor to ceiling for slab installations or open shelving walls

Installation Cost in Calgary

For a typical Calgary kitchen (30-40 sq ft of backsplash):

  • Budget tile: $500-$900 total
  • Mid-range porcelain or mosaic: $1,000-$2,000
  • Slab backsplash: $2,500-$5,500
  • Premium zellige or stone: $2,000-$3,500

Grout Matters More Than You Think

White grout shows stains. Dark grout is dramatic but can look dirty. Our go-to in Calgary: warm grey grout with white tile. It hides splashes and stays clean-looking for years.
