What Calgary Allows
As of 2026, Calgary’s Land Use Bylaw allows garage suites (also called carriage suites or garden suites) in most R-1, R-CG, and many other residential districts. The City of Calgary actively supports secondary suites to address the housing shortage.

Beside the Garage (Side Suite)
Suite built beside the garage bay on the same slab. Slightly easier structurally, works on wider lots.
Permit Requirements in Calgary
- Development Permit (DP): Required for the new building/addition
- Building Permit: Required for all construction work
- Electrical Permit: Required
- Plumbing Permit: Required
- Gas Permit: Required (if gas heat)
Timeline: DPs take 6-12 weeks. Building permits 2-6 weeks. Plan for 3-4 months before breaking ground.
