An Insulated Garage Transforms Your Calgary Winter

The difference between an uninsulated and a properly insulated garage in a Calgary January is 20–30°C. Your car starts easier, your pipes don’t freeze, your HVAC isn’t working as hard, and your tools and vehicles are protected.

Garage Insulation Zones

Garage Walls

  • Attached garage walls (adjacent to home): Minimum R-19, often R-22 (2×6 framing + batt)
  • Exterior garage walls: R-12 minimum (2×4 + batt) or R-20 (2×6 + batt) for heated garages
  • Spray foam option: 3″ closed-cell = R-21, vapour barrier not required separately

Garage Ceiling (Most Important)

Heat rises. An uninsulated ceiling makes all wall insulation almost pointless for a heated garage.

  • If living space above: R-20 minimum (R-38 for better energy performance)
  • If attic above: R-40 minimum (blown-in is common)
  • Vapour barrier on the warm side (interior face of ceiling insulation)

Garage Door

  • Insulated garage door (R-12 to R-18): covers a huge area
  • Adding weatherstripping and a bottom seal makes a significant difference
  • See our garage door guide for insulated door options

Concrete Slab

  • Existing slab: not practical to insulate retroactively without full demo
  • New slab: 2″ XPS under slab = R-10 (significantly warmer floor, protects against frost heave)

Insulation Materials for Calgary Garages

Material R-Value/Inch Moisture Resistance Cost/sq ft
Closed-cell spray foam R-6.5–7 Excellent $4–$7
Open-cell spray foam R-3.5–4 Poor (absorbs moisture) $1.50–$3
Fiberglass batt R-3.14–3.85/in Poor $0.50–$1.50
Rockwool/mineral wool R-3.7–4.2/in Good (water-resistant) $0.80–$2
XPS rigid foam R-5/in Excellent $0.80–$2

For an Unheated Calgary Garage

Even unheated, insulation keeps the garage above -10°C in most Calgary winters — protecting your car, pipes, and stored goods. R-12 walls and R-20 ceiling is a good target for an unheated garage.

For a Heated Calgary Garage

If you’re adding a gas tube heater, in-floor heat, or forced air, proper insulation makes the system efficient and effective. R-22+ walls, R-40+ ceiling, insulated door, and sealed floor transitions are the target.

Cost to Insulate a Calgary Garage

Scope Cost
Batt insulation (double garage walls + ceiling) $2,000–$4,000
Spray foam walls (double garage) $4,000–$8,000
Full insulation package (walls, ceiling, door upgrade) $6,000–$14,000
