A Car Lift Doubles Your Garage Capacity
For Calgary car enthusiasts, home mechanics, and classic car owners, a car lift isn’t a luxury — it’s a space multiplier. Park two vehicles in one garage bay, or bring your own service work in-house.
Types of Car Lifts
2-Post Lift
Two vertical posts with arms that lift the vehicle by the frame. Best for mechanical work.
- Cost: $3,500-$8,000 equipment, $1,500-$3,500 install
- Ceiling height required: 11-12′ minimum
- Best for: Mechanical work, tire changes, full underside access
4-Post Lift
Four posts support the vehicle on runways. Best for storage and long-term parking.
- Cost: $3,000-$7,500 equipment, $1,200-$2,500 install
- Ceiling height required: 10-12′
- Best for: Car storage, parking two vehicles in one bay
Scissor Lift / Mid-Rise
Compact, portable, lifts 3-4 feet.
- Cost: $1,800-$4,500
- Ceiling height: No minimum (stored flat)
- Best for: DIY mechanics in standard-height garages, tight spaces
Ceiling Height Requirements
| Lift Type | Vehicle Being Lifted | Ceiling Needed |
|---|---|---|
| 2-post | Sedan (4.5′ tall) | 11′ |
| 2-post | SUV (6′ tall) | 12′ |

Concrete Slab Requirements (Critical)
- Minimum thickness: 4″ for most 2-post lifts, 6″ ideal
- Concrete strength: 3,000 PSI minimum
- Flat and level: Slope less than 1% across lift location
- Anchor bolts: Wedge anchors or chemical epoxy anchors
Older Calgary garages often have 3″ slabs with no rebar. You may need to pour a new slab section for a 2-post lift ($1,500-$3,500).
Electrical Requirements
- 2-post hydraulic: 220V, 20A dedicated circuit (single-phase motor)
- 4-post: Some are manual, powered versions same as above
- 3-phase commercial lifts: Not practical for residential

Permits & Inspections
Residential car lifts in Calgary typically don’t require a building permit, but electrical work needs an electrical permit. Always confirm with your contractor. If you’re building a new garage, design around the lift from the start (ceiling height, slab specs, electrical).
