Electrical: The Foundation of a Good Workshop

A workshop garage needs dedicated heavy electrical from the start.

  • Minimum subpanel: 100A (200A preferred for full shops)
  • Circuits needed: 20A for general tools, 30A for table saw/planer, 50A for welding, 30A for air compressor
  • 240V receptacles: At least 2–4 for large tools
  • Outlets: Every 6 feet at workbench height and floor level
  • Cost: $3,000–$8,000 for full workshop electrical including subpanel

Lighting

  • Target: 50 foot-candles at workbench height minimum
  • LED shop lights (4000K–5000K) flush-mounted or hanging
  • 8-foot LED vapor-tight fixtures: $50–$150 each, very effective
  • Task lighting at specific workstations
  • Aim for no shadows in the primary work area

Air Compressor & Compressed Air Lines

For a serious workshop, run rigid copper or black iron compressed air lines along the walls with drops every 8-10 feet. Install while walls are open. Adding later means cutting into finished walls.

  • 3/4″ main line, 1/2″ drops
  • Include moisture trap and oil separator
  • Cost to rough-in: $800–$2,500

Dust Collection

Plan your dust collection trunk lines during framing. A central dust collector with 4″ PVC branches to major woodworking equipment. Install before drywall.

Ventilation

Workshops generate fumes (finishes, welding, exhaust), dust, and humidity. Dedicated exhaust fan (300–600 CFM) and make-up air are important. Gas-fired workshop heating should be separated from finishing areas (explosion hazard with lacquer/stain).

Flooring

  • Sealed concrete: cheap, functional, handles shop chemicals
  • Epoxy: cleaner, easier to sweep, protects slab — $6–$12/sq ft
  • Anti-fatigue rubber matting at primary workstations
