Calgary Winters Make This a No-Brainer

If you’re gutting your bathroom anyway, heated floors are the single best comfort upgrade you can add for the cost. Stepping onto a warm floor on a −20°C Calgary morning is genuinely life-changing.

Two Main Types

Electric Radiant (Mat or Wire)

Thin heating cables embedded in a mat, installed under tile. The most common choice for Calgary bathroom renovations.

  • Lower upfront cost
  • Easy to install in single rooms
  • Costs $50-$100/month to run (one bathroom)
  • Best for bathrooms under 100 sq ft

Hydronic (Hot Water)

PEX tubing with circulating hot water, usually tied into a boiler. More common in whole-home retrofits or custom builds.

  • Higher upfront cost
  • Cheaper to run (especially if you already have a boiler)
  • Better for larger areas or whole-home installations
  • Needs a boiler or dedicated water heater

Cost in Calgary (Installed)

Bathroom Size Electric Radiant Hydronic (Add-on)
Powder room (20 sq ft) $500 – $900 N/A (too small)
3-piece (45 sq ft) $900 – $1,800 $2,500 – $4,500
5-piece ensuite (100 sq ft) $1,800 – $3,200 $4,500 – $8,000

⚠ Estimate Disclaimer: These are only ROUGH estimates that can vary wildly. Do not take these numbers as gospel. Having a defined scope of work and exact selections will give you clarity.

Includes mat/wire, thermostat, labour, and extra self-leveller if required.

Do You Need a Special Thermostat?

Yes. A floor-sensor thermostat is required for heated floors (programmable is best). Popular choices: Schluter DITRA-HEAT DHERT, Nuheat, Warmly Yours, Honeywell. Expect $200-$400 for the thermostat alone.

Where to Install It

  • Always: Under tile floor in front of the vanity and toilet
  • Highly recommended: Bathroom/ensuite floor fully covered
  • Luxury: Extend into the shower (yes, this is amazing)
  • Consider: Heated bench in the shower

What It Costs to Run

Electric radiant uses about 12 watts per sq ft. A 45 sq ft bathroom heated 8 hours/day in Calgary winter costs around $15-$25/month on top of your normal electricity bill. Most homeowners run it only during morning/evening routines.

Is It Worth It?

Yes. If you’re already tiling the floor, the incremental cost is $800-$2,000. That’s the best-value luxury upgrade in your whole bathroom. Almost every bathroom renovation we do in Calgary includes heated floors now.

Install Gotchas

  • Don’t put heat under the vanity or bathtub (wasted heat, can damage cabinetry)
  • Don’t install under a floor drain
  • Use self-levelling compound over the mats before tiling
  • Run a dedicated 15A or 20A circuit
  • Never trim heating wires — they’re a fixed length
