The Railing Defines Your Deck’s Look

Railings are one of the most visible design elements of a Calgary deck — and they affect the view, the maintenance requirements, and the cost significantly. Here are your options.

Railing Materials Compared

Pressure-Treated Wood Railing

  • Traditional look, matches wood deck
  • Maintenance: paint/stain every 2–3 years
  • Cost: $60–$100/linear foot (posts, top/bottom rails, balusters)

Aluminum (Powder-Coated)

Lightweight, low maintenance, available in many colours and styles. Calgary’s most popular non-glass railing.

  • Maintenance: minimal — wipe down, no painting
  • Cost: $90–$150/linear foot installed
  • Colours: black, white, bronze, brown, custom

Glass Panel Railing

Frameless or semi-frameless tempered glass. Maximum view preservation — highly popular on decks with views or in open backyards.

  • Maintenance: clean glass (squeegee, glass cleaner)
  • Cost: $150–$300+/linear foot installed
  • Specs: minimum 12mm (1/2″) tempered glass, CBC compliant

Cable Railing (Stainless Steel)

Horizontal stainless cable tensioned between posts. Open, minimalist, contemporary look.

  • Maintenance: tension cables annually, wipe down
  • Cost: $120–$200/linear foot
  • Post material: aluminum or wood

Composite Railing

Matches composite deck boards. Won’t rot, no paint.

  • Cost: $100–$160/linear foot

Alberta Building Code Railing Requirements

  • Required if deck is more than 600mm (24″) above grade
  • Minimum height: 900mm (35.4″) for decks under 1.8m (6′) above grade
  • Minimum height: 1,070mm (42″) for decks 1.8m or higher above grade
  • Baluster spacing: no opening that allows a 100mm (4″) sphere to pass through
  • Top rail must support 1.5 kN/m horizontal load

Glass Railing in Calgary: Cold Weather Performance

Tempered glass handles Calgary temperature extremes well. The weak points are the mounting hardware — use stainless steel hardware, not galvanized, to prevent rust from road salt and moisture. Frameless glass is best in Calgary because there are fewer metal parts to corrode.

What It Costs to Rail a Calgary Deck

Deck Perimeter Wood Aluminum Glass (Frameless)
40 linear ft $3,000–$4,500 $4,500–$7,000 $8,000–$14,000
60 linear ft $4,500–$7,000 $6,000–$10,000 $11,000–$20,000
