The Tub Debate: Freestanding or Built-In?

Freestanding tubs look incredible in photos. Built-in tubs are more practical. Here’s the honest comparison for Calgary homeowners.

Freestanding Bathtubs

Pros

  • Stunning visual centrepiece
  • Works with any floor tile (no surround to match)
  • Easier to install (no tile surround)
  • Modern, spa-like feel
  • Available in many shapes (oval, rectangular, clawfoot)

Cons

  • Cleaning behind and underneath is a pain
  • Floor-mount faucet required ($800–$2,500+) — separate cost
  • No ledge for products
  • Overflow and drain location fixed to tub — limits placement
  • Generally holds less water than alcove

Built-In (Alcove) Bathtubs

Pros

  • Wall-mount faucet (cheaper)
  • Built-in ledge for products
  • Easier to clean around
  • Often has showerhead combo
  • More water capacity in the same footprint

Cons

  • Three-wall surround required (tile or tub surround)
  • Less visually exciting
  • Limited shapes (usually standard rectangular)

Calgary-Specific Advice

  • If your ensuite is under 80 sq ft, built-in saves space
  • If your ensuite is 100+ sq ft, a freestanding tub is worth it
  • Never put a freestanding tub on an exterior wall without proper insulation check (cold floors crack seals)
  • Match drain and faucet finishes — mismatches look cheap

Do Bathtubs Add Value in Calgary?

Debated topic. For family homes, yes — at least one soaker tub helps with resale. For ensuites, less critical. A stunning freestanding tub in a luxury ensuite absolutely adds perceived value. A standard alcove tub in a main bath: expected, not a selling feature.

Popular Brands in Calgary

  • MAAX (Canadian, widely available)
  • Kohler, American Standard (mid-range)
  • Victoria + Albert, Kaldewei (luxury freestanding)
  • BainUltra (Canadian luxury — hot tub/soaker hybrids)
