One of the Most Common Questions We Get

“How long will this take?” It depends on the scope, the complexity, and whether there are surprises. Here are realistic timelines for Calgary renovations.

Renovation Timeline by Project Type

Project Timeline
Powder room refresh 1–2 weeks
Full powder room gut 3–5 weeks
Bathroom renovation (main) 4–8 weeks
Master ensuite renovation 6–10 weeks
Kitchen renovation (basic) 6–10 weeks

Basement development 10–18 weeks
Detached garage build 10–16 weeks
Whole-home renovation 16–52 weeks

⚠ Estimate Disclaimer: These are only ROUGH estimates that can vary wildly. Do not take these numbers as gospel. Having a defined scope of work and exact selections will give you clarity.

The Timeline Phases

Pre-Construction (Often Overlooked)

  • Design and planning: 2–8 weeks
  • Material selections and ordering: 2–6 weeks (cabinets can take 8–14 weeks)
  • Permit applications: 2–8 weeks depending on type
  • Pre-Con Total: 6–20 weeks before a single wall is touched

Most homeowners underestimate pre-construction. If you want to start your kitchen renovation in April, the design should start in January.

Construction Phase

Rough work first: demo, framing, plumbing, electrical, HVAC. Then inspections. Then insulation, drywall, flooring, cabinetry, plumbing trim-out, electrical trim-out, painting, finishes.

Final Punch and Touch-Ups

Typically 1–3 weeks of touch-ups, fixture installation, final cleaning, and homeowner walkthrough.

What Causes Delays

  • Long lead items: Custom cabinets (8–14 weeks), specialty tile (4–8 weeks), luxury appliances (4–12 weeks)
  • Permit delays: City of Calgary can take 2–8 weeks for permits
  • Hidden conditions: Asbestos, knob-and-tube wiring, rotten subfloor, mould
  • Decision delays: Changing tile mid-project = 2–4 week wait for new order
  • Subcontractor availability: Licensed plumbers and electricians are busy in Calgary

How to Keep Your Project on Track

  • Make all material selections before construction starts
  • Order long-lead items immediately after contract signing
  • Don’t change scope mid-project
  • Have a dedicated project manager (or ask your contractor who yours is)
  • Build 10–15% buffer into your timeline
