No More Shovelling a Calgary Driveway at 6 AM

Snowmelt systems under your driveway or walkway are the ultimate Calgary winter upgrade. If you’re pouring new concrete or pavers anyway, adding heat is the smart move.

Two Types of Snowmelt Systems

Electric (Resistance Heating)

Heating cables embedded in the concrete or mortar bed. Cheaper to install, more expensive to run.

  • Typical install cost: $15–$25/sq ft
  • Good for: smaller areas (walkways, front entrance, steps)
  • Running cost: $1–$2/sq ft per winter season

Hydronic (Hot Water Loops)

PEX tubing circulating heated water from a boiler. More expensive to install, significantly cheaper to run long-term.

  • Typical install cost: $20–$40/sq ft
  • Good for: large driveways, full property systems
  • Running cost: $0.30–$0.70/sq ft per winter season

Cost for a Typical Calgary Home

Area Size Electric Hydronic
Front walkway + steps 80 sq ft $4,000–$6,000 N/A (too small)
Single garage driveway 200 sq ft $8,000–$15,000 $14,000–$22,000
Double garage driveway 400 sq ft $16,000–$28,000 $24,000–$45,000
Full property (driveway + walks) 600+ sq ft $25,000–$45,000 $35,000–$75,000

Smart Controls

Modern systems use a ground-mounted sensor and a weather station to activate only when needed. You can also use smart thermostats with snow/ice detection (Warmup, Nuheat, Watts Radiant).

  • Manual control: Turn on yourself when it snows
  • Automatic sensor: Activates when temp drops AND moisture is detected
  • Smart app control: Monitor and adjust remotely

Surface Compatibility

  • Concrete: Best — heat distributes evenly, longest life
  • Interlock pavers: Works well with a proper mortar bed
  • Asphalt: Not recommended (asphalt degrades with repeated heating)
  • Exposed aggregate: Yes, works fine

Do It During Construction, Not After

Adding snowmelt to an existing driveway means ripping up the driveway, installing cable, and re-pouring. Cost doubles or triples vs new construction. If you’re ever replacing a driveway in Calgary, always add snowmelt at the same time.

Electrical Requirements

  • Small electric walkway: 20A, 240V circuit
  • Large electric driveway: May require 60-100A and possibly panel upgrade
  • Hydronic system: Boiler + 20-30A for circulation pumps and controls
